Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients for Dough

  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cinnamon Swirl

  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 4 ounces (113g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper to ensure easy removal and cleanup.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients to Dough: In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk and vanilla extract. Pour this into the dry mixture and gently mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the dough.
  5. Press Dough into Pan: Evenly press the dough into the prepared baking pan, forming a uniform base for the bars.
  6. Prepare Cinnamon Swirl: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and ground cinnamon thoroughly.
  7. Assemble the Swirl Layer: Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the dough base in the pan. Then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the buttered base to create the signature swirl layer.
  8. Bake the Bars: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown. Remove from oven and allow bars to cool completely in the pan before frosting.
  9. Make Cream Cheese Frosting: In a bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and softened butter together until smooth and creamy. Gradually incorporate the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, beating until the frosting is light and spreadable.
  10. Frost and Serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the cooled bars. Cut into squares or bars, serve, and enjoy the delightful cinnamon roll flavors in each bite.

Notes

  • For best results, chill the dough if it becomes too soft before pressing into the pan.
  • Make sure the bars are completely cool before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
  • You can substitute buttermilk with milk plus 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice if needed.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • These bars can be reheated briefly in the microwave for a warm and gooey treat.
