Ingredients
Scale
Cracker Base
- 40 salted saltine crackers
Cinnamon Sugar Topping
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Caramel Layer
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
Chocolate Topping
- 2 cups white chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Crackers: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil and place the 40 salted saltine crackers in a single layer on the lined sheet to form the base of the toffee.
- Mix Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon until the mixture is evenly blended. Set aside for later sprinkling.
- Make the Caramel: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 cup unsalted butter and 1 cup brown sugar together. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it boil continuously for 3 minutes, until it turns a deep caramel color and thickens.
- Pour Caramel over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot caramel mixture evenly over the saltine crackers on the baking sheet. Use a rubber spatula to carefully spread the caramel to cover all crackers completely.
- Bake the Toffee: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 6 minutes. The caramel mixture will be bubbly and set slightly during this time.
- Add White Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle 2 cups of white chocolate chips evenly across the hot caramel layer. Let them sit for about 5 minutes to melt. If the chips are not melting sufficiently, return the pan to the oven briefly. Use a spatula to spread the melted white chocolate into an even layer.
- Sprinkle Cinnamon Sugar: While the white chocolate is still warm, sprinkle the prepared cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the top for that classic churro flavor.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or place it in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to help set the white chocolate layer. Once fully set, break the toffee into pieces and serve.
Notes
- Line the baking sheet with parchment paper or foil for easier cleanup and to prevent sticking.
- Boiling the caramel mixture for the full 3 minutes is crucial to achieve the proper toffee texture.
- If white chocolate chips do not melt fully after sprinkling, return the baking sheet to the oven for a minute or two to facilitate melting.
- Allow the toffee to cool completely before breaking to ensure clean, crisp pieces.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
