These 1-Hour Soft and Buttery Dinner Rolls are perfect for any meal, offering fluffy, tender texture and a rich buttery flavor. Quick to make with simple ingredients, they are ideal for weeknight dinners or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 3 ½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

Additional

  • Extra melted butter, for brushing

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Pan: Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside to prevent sticking.
  2. Heat Liquids: In a microwave-safe bowl or saucepan, combine the water, melted butter, milk, and honey. Warm the mixture to about 110°F—warm to touch but not hot—using 15-second intervals in the microwave or gentle heat on the stove, stirring occasionally.
  3. Activate Yeast: Pour the warm liquid mixture into a stand mixer bowl. Sprinkle the yeast evenly over the surface and lightly stir with a fork. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: Add 3 ½ cups of flour and the sea salt to the yeast mixture in the stand mixer bowl.
  5. Mix and Knead Dough: Using the dough hook attachment, mix on medium-low speed until combined. If the dough sticks to the bowl sides, add flour gradually, ¼ cup at a time, up to 4 cups total until dough pulls away from the bowl but remains slightly sticky. Continue kneading for 4-5 minutes until smooth. Shape dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl.
  6. First Rise: Cover the bowl with a damp towel or paper towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 15 minutes until slightly puffed.
  7. Shape Rolls: Gently punch down the dough to release air. Divide into 15 equal pieces and shape each into a smooth ball. Arrange the balls evenly in the prepared baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 15-20 minutes until puffy.
  8. Bake: Remove the cover and bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until the tops are lightly golden and fully cooked through.
  9. Brush with Butter: Transfer the hot baking dish to a wire rack. Brush the warm rolls generously with melted butter for a soft, rich finish.
  10. Serve: Serve the rolls warm and enjoy the soft, buttery texture perfect alongside any meal.

Notes

  • Use warm but not hot liquids to avoid killing the yeast.
  • You can substitute honey with sugar if needed.
  • For softer rolls, brush with extra melted butter before baking in addition to after baking.
  • Rolls can be stored in an airtight container for 2 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
  • Allow frozen rolls to thaw and warm in the oven before serving.
